A "Knothole" is a
cover with a hole designed into
it so that
- the matches are purposely visible (see example on the left).
- Often, this is because the matchbook is also a "Feature,"
- where the matches, themselves, have art work on them
- (see example on the right). Although most collectors strip
- the matches out of covers, Features, for obvious reasons,
- are always kept intact. Features were another product of
- the Lion Match Co., and they reached their height during
- the 1950s. These are highly collectible covers, even to
- those not into the hobby.

- 410 Knotholes were listed as of 2005, and almost 5,000
- Features are known.
